News

For more than a month the Basque Country is suffering heavy storms. The last warning we have received is for this afternoon when it is expected that the waves will be as high as 10m. It means that the fishermen will once again not be able to do their job. Even bigger ships have to be carefull. Last month a big ships broke into two pieces when it tried to enter into the harbour of Hendaya in the south of France, just a two hours drive away from here. It was a relatively new ship.
So far the winter hasn't been very cold and the mimosas are flowering for quite a few weeks already but there have been plenty of damages caused by several storms and hughe waves. We keep our fingers crossed and hope that soon the weather changes in order that our guests can admire the singular landscape of Urdaibai and surroundings.
Starting at Easter the Centre of Alternative Energies can be visited in Munitibar (some 14 km away from Gernika). It has been installed on the grounds of an old foundry of iron. Some 200 years ago Munitibar was an important village with several foundries.

History

The 3rd February is dedicated to Saint Blas. He was a doctor and as a christian persecuted and finally killed. People here believe that he had special abilities for curing throat troubles and problems of the nose and ears. In the Basque Country every year lots of strings of different colours as well as sweets are blessed by the priests. For some weeks people wear one of the strings around the neck in order to avoid colds and in general problems with the respiratorysystem. Neither the sweets nor the strings can do any harm and at this time of year it is quite easy to catch a cold, so why not try to prevent it? Strings and sweets are given as presents to family members and friends.

Kaixo (hello)

We, Víctor and Helga, a retired couple, are the owner of a guest house started seven years. It's our intention to contact with people from different regions of Spain but also from other countries because it keeps us active mentally andphysically.
During these years we have got to know people from quite a few European countries but also from USA, Latin America, Russia, Japan and so on.
We are intending to have satisfied guests although without luxuries but comfort. We wish that they may get to know the magnificent  and diverse countryside as well as the customs and history of the Basque country.
Through this blog, which we start today, we want to inform about the country and its people, tell little happenings and arise the interest of the readers for this beautiful spot.
